Endurance Championship - Round 1 – MK – 21st February.
There was some worried looks on many of the Daytona staff’s faces in the morning as thick snow was bucketing down early in the morning. As it happened, the white stuff abated before the start of qualifying and left a very wet track for the 21 drivers to contend with. As the 1 hour race got underway it was clear that the heavier drivers had an advantage in the wet conditions with perennial fast drivers James Brunton and Chris Carter sprinting away. Chris was making up for a difficult qualifying session and was flying through the field. Soon on the back of James he made his advantage count and passed Brunton and pulled away a significant lead and despite a lapse of concentration that ended in a spin, Chris had enough time in the bag to win the race outright. Behind James, David Payne got on to the podium once again in 3rd spot for the heavies. Vinod Hirani and Christian Abanda rounded out the top 5.
The lightweights unusually were generally slower than their heavier compatriots but this didn’t stop them having some great racing. Andrew Biddle was the fastest man on the track on the last few laps and his earlier consistency paid off as he took the win from Hugo Bush and Paul Peebles. Ryan Murphy and Pete Forsyth completed the top 5 positions at the flag. There were some very soggy and cold drivers at the end of the race with quite a few needing to dry out as they were also racing in the Sprint races later in the afternoon.
Congratulations to all the drivers many of whom made the challenging conditions look easy.
Sprint Championship.
LIGHTS
A super grid of 23 lightweight drivers tool to the now drying track to battle it out for the first win of the 2010 series. Despite some very fast new faces, it was the usual suspects at the front of the grid for the final with Chris Hackworth taking pole position. Chris made a fantastic start had shot out into a 3 second lead after the first 2 laps. Matthew Edmonson-Jones got the better of James Pratt and Ben Leslie to get into 2nd spot and chased down Chris to challenge for the lead. After some great battling, Matthew finally got into the lead with a great move into turn 2 after setting up the pass at turn 10. Chris did his level best to regain the lead but Matthew was not to be beaten. Behind this exciting battle, Ben Leslie took his maiden podium spot in 3rd place from James Pratt and Ryan Murphy. Great stuff from the lightweight drivers!
HEAVIES
A very competitive and evenly matched heavyweight grid meant that there was far too much contact and unsportsmanlike driving throughout the heats. The best way to keep out of what was effectively world war 3 was to keep your head down and stay out of trouble and that was exactly what Stuart Hatton and James Brunton did to arrive at the front of the grid for the final. This was Stuart’s first pole position and was richly deserved. In the race though, Stuart couldn’t match the relentless pace of James Brunton who dashed off into a lead he looked never likely to yield. Behind these two, Neil Fisher was an excellent 3rd from Winston Bent and Vince Cogzell.

Endurance Championship Round 2 – MK – 14th March
In vast contrast to the weather in round one, the 2nd round of the 2010 Vodafone DMAX UK Championship was held in near perfect conditions. Always working to improve the DMAX karts, series boss Richard Brunning decided for the very first time to join in and test some development parts. Also racing, but only for fun was Daytona Race Director Scott Taggart and these two had an absolute ding dong battle at the front for the whole hour and despite the best efforts of Scott, he couldn’t quite squeeze past Richard at the line. Both drivers were disqualified from the results.
Further back and in the race proper, 2009 Lightweight Sprint Champion Chris Hackworth showed his class by qualifying on pole and had a rather lonely race to take the lightweight win from the ever fast Andrew Biddle and the improving Anson Williams. The heavyweight race wasn’t quite as clear cut with some fantastic efforts all the way down the field and some very close battling throughout the race. Andy Griffiths had a superb run to win by a large margin but behind Andy it was anyone’s race for second with Chris Carter, Brian Alexander, Christian Abanda, David Payne, Michael Ballinger and Vinod Hirani all within 10 seconds at the finish. It was nip and tuck, but Chris and Brian took the final podium spots.

Endurance Championship - Round 3 – P.F. International Circuit – 18th April
For our first visit to the superb PFI facility we couldn't have asked for better weather. Cool air and a warm track made for some fast times with everyone enjoying the challenge of a new circuit on the DMAX roadshow.
After some technical issues in qualifying left us with no recorded times, it was decided to run a 5 minute shootout for pole which was duly won by Chris Hackworth with Melvin Collins and Hugo Bush trailing the PFI regular. James Brunton led the heavies from Adam Nakar and Chris Carter. Survival was the aim of the game at the first hairpin after the green light and the train of 23 karts duly got round with only minor bumping and bashing. Chris Hackworth made the most of his front row spot and sped off in the lead. Hugo Bush battled his way up through the field and set off after Hackworth with Collins gamely trying to hang on to the super fast former enduro winner. Try as he might, Hugo couldn't close the gap during the race and despite there being only 9/1000ths between their fastest laps, had to settle for the runner up position. Melvin had the last podium spot with Anson Williams in 4th place. With the wide open and fast track, the heavies weren't as handicapped as they might be at other tracks and James Brunton kept with the lighter drivers to record a superb win. Behind the hard charging Brunton, Adam Nakar and Chris Carter were embroiled in a titanic battle for 2nd place. Nary more than half a gnat's nadger between them for most of the 1 hour race, it was thrilling to watch. At the flag, Adam just pipped Chris for the runner up position. There was action all the way down the field with all the drivers revelling in the fast, smooth and dry conditions.
Finally, a shout out to David Payne, who due to the volcanic ash situation was stuck in Stockholm and couldn't get back to PFI in time. I know he was really looking forward to this one.

Endurance Championship Round 4 - Lydd - 16th May 2010
The weather goddess Aura was smiling down on the Kent circuit as 23 eager drivers lined up for the fourth round of the endurance series.
After 15 minutes of qualifying, Chris Hackworth was 3/10ths up on the chasing field and the next 12 drivers were covered by less than 6/10ths!
A very close race was definitely on the cards. Antonio Carrozza was his closest challenger and the heavy duo of James Brunton and Vinod Hirani 3rd and 4th. As the green flag dropped, Chris Hackworth shot off to an early lead and gapped the chasing pack with Carrozza in 2nd. Antonio soon closed the gap down and the pair had a fantastic fight for much of the remaining race. It was all kicking off behind these two with Brunton, Hirani, Raph Rees, Hugo Bush, Ivan Taranov, Andy Griffiths and Chris Carter all involved in massive scraps throughout the race.
Ivan Taranov dropped back to 10th at one point but made a herculean effort to drag himself back up towards the front with a stunning drive and finished 2nd in the lightweight category. Behind Ivan, Hugo Bush took the 3rd place spot on the podium in lights. Vinod Hirani held off Andy Griffiths and Chris Carter to record a superb win in the Heavies! At the front though, Antonio Carrozza just pipped Chris Hackworth for the win, but Hackworth took the trophy as Antonio does not count towards the series. There was some cracking action on track and all of the trophy winners fully deserved their prize.

Vodafone DMAX Enduro Championship – Round 6 – Milton Keynes.
Back at the home track of Milton Keynes for the first time since March, 20 eager endure racers went out for 15 minutes of timed qualifying with the sky overcast and a cool breeze blowing. As expected, Hugo Bush and Chris Hackworth were the class of the lightweight field separated by just 34/1000 of a second with Hugo the fastest. Rajiv Seneviratne was a few tenths back from the regular duo. In heavies, James Brunton made his return from a holiday hiatus and stuck his kart on pole for the heavies with Chris Carter and David Payne snapping at his heels.
As the green flag dropped, it was Hackworth who made his intentions clear by grabbing the lead on the first lap hotly pursued by Bush. These two drivers were nailed together for the entire race swapping positions numerous times but never having more than two kart lengths between them at any time during the whole race. Rajiv had a fantastic race keeping the top two honest but couldn’t quite match their stunning pace.
In the heavies, the race was equally as hotly contested. James Brunton and Chris Carter had a ding dong for much of the race until James slipped back by just a few kart lengths and couldn’t quite get back on terms with Carter. David Payne took yet another podium place with a great drive and Michael Ballinger and Steve Lyons rounded out the top 5.
Back at the front, Hugo and Chris fought to the line but it was Hackworth who took the chequered flag and the win. Fantastic racing from these two drivers who asked for no quarter. Rajiv took a lonely 3rd with Tim McKeegan and Bruce Tattersall completing the top 5.

Vodafone DMAX Championship Round 7 – Whilton Mill – August 15th 2010
Heavy overnight rain had left the Northamptonshire track decidedly damp before the start of qualifying but with 19 karts flying round the times tumbled throughout the 20 minute session. At the end of qualifying, Hugo Bush clocked an impressive 52.912 for Pole position just over a tenth ahead of Chris Hackworth who was in turn just 28/100ths ahead of Owen Jenman completing the top 3 places in the lightweights. The heavyweight boys were headed by Whilton regular Luke Austin followed by David Payne and Michael Ballinger.
With the track now fully dry but still quite green, Hugo and Chris lead them off from the start. The top 3 were setting a cracking pace and were pulling away from the chasing pack while all the while battling for the lead. Each of these drivers took their turn at the front but around halfway through, Hugo Bush got the bit between his teeth and managed to pull a gap from Chris and Owen. Behind the lead trio, Ivan Taranov had a bad start spinning off on lap 2 but then battled his way back up through the field impressively. Mark Timko started 7th and had a super drive to finish 5th overall and 3rd in lights. The heavy race wasn’t quite as close with David Payne fast and consistent to take the win from Michael Ballinger and Vinod Hirani. Back at the front with the lightweights, with around 15 minutes to go, Chris Hackworth began to close the gap to a visibly tiring Hugo Bush and within a few laps was right behind the leader. Chris lined up a pass into the downhill right hander and lobbed his kart up the inside. Hugo had run a little wide on the previous corner and had got his tyres a bit damp on the still wet run off and lost control of his kart as Hackworth passed him. This also allowed Owen Jenman through and Hugo had to settle for 3rd on the road. Hugo’s consolation was the fastest lap of the race by 2/10ths and that Owen didn’t count so he finished 2nd! After the race there were a lot of tired looking drivers as an hour round the demanding Whilton circuit was hard work.

Vodafone DMAX Championship – 5th September 2010 – Daytona Lydd International
15 drivers took to the fast Kent track for times qualifying. Sandown Park Race Director Declan Walsh raced the DMAX karts for the first time and duly showed his speed by taking pole position from F3 regular Alex Brundle with series leader Chris Hackworth in 3rd. The heavies were headed by Chris Carter, Pat Horrocks and Andy Mitchell.
At the start of the race, the leading lightweight trio shot off into the distance trading blows as they went. Initially Alex got the drop on Declan but Declan soon got by and Hackworth kept within striking distance should there be an opportunity to pass. Once the race had settled down, Declan started to pull away from Alex and in turn Alex gapped Chris. Unusually, Hugo Bush had a poor qualifying session but he soon started to make his way up from 11th on the grid and hauled himself up to 4th place with a superb drive. The heavies had a familiar feel with Chris Carter showing his speed all the way through the race taking the win from Michael Ballinger and a delighted podium virgin Christian Abanda. At the flag, Declan was a comfortable winner from Alex and Chris Hackworth with Hugo taking 4th place on the road.
As Declan was a guest driver and an employee, he wasn’t eligible for trophies or points.
