LIGHTWEIGHTS
We all caught our breath after that scintillating finish to the heavyweight final, attention turned to the lightweights and once again they didn’t disappoint.
Right from the off; the field tore up the track that was now only damp in isolated spots. The pace was frightening and the racing fierce with Matthew Edmondson-Jones leading the way. It wasn’t long before he was joined by Antonio Carrozza and Christopher Hackworth who had started the race on row 5! Another driver hacking his way through the field was Pete Ellis who after starting on the front row dropped to last after a first lap incident. He soon joined the leading bunch after a superb recovery drive. This group simply stormed their way through the race with no quarter being asked and absolutely none given. The final lap was heart stopping stuff with any one of these drivers able to win the race. Just like the Heavyweight final, the race hinged on the last 2 corners and just to add to the excitement, a backmarker was certain to get in the way. As the karts flew round turn 9 for the last time, the crowd collectively held their breath and watched as the drivers braked as late as they possibly could for the hairpin and on the exit, the surprised backmarker with Antonia Carrozza made a sandwich out of Christopher Hackworth and the resulting contact saw tyre smoke pour from Hackworth’s rear wheel allowing Pete Ellis and Carrozza to dive up the inside of the last corner and Matthew Edmondson-Jones to nose ahead across the line. A truly breathtaking finish to a fantastic final.
