Martin Brundle Opens Daytona Lydd

TV’S MARTIN BRUNDLE OPENS NEW DAYTONA RACEWAY

BBC F1 presenter, Le Mans winner and former F1 driver Martin Brundle officially opened Daytona Lydd Interational Raceway in Kent last Saturday (6 March) and then, minutes later, celebrated the occasion by competing in the inaugural race.

Daytona Motorsport’s acquisition of Lydd, which joins Daytona’s existing circuits in Esher (Sandown Park), Milton Keynes and Manchester, further confirms its position as the UK’s premier kart venue operator.

As well as Brundle, the special opening endurance race also featured 2009 Ginetta Junior Champion Sarah Moore, F2 racer Jack Clarke and a host of other motor sport personalities. After some thrilling on-track action, the 90-minute showdown was ultimately won by Rick Parfitt Jnr. - son of the Status Quo rock legend Rick Parfitt, teaming up with two journalists from Autosport magazine, Charles Bradley and Glen Freeman. A hard fought second place went to Dan Brown, Brian Hunt and Ian Dutfield with Raph Rees, Rene Lubbock and David Lampitt completing the top three podium positions.

All 19 teams were competing in Daytona Motorsport’s Vodafone DMax karts. These super-fast 2-stroke machines are capable of reaching speeds close to 70 mph on the fastest straight of the 1240 metre Kent circuit. Race winner Parfitt Jnr also set the fastest lap time stopping the clocks at an impressive 43.418 seconds.

Charles Graham, Daytona CEO, hailed the opening as an immense triumph, “We are delighted to bring Lydd International into the Daytona Group and to have Martin Brundle here to help us mark this special occasion. Saturday’s event was a huge success and showcased just what a great circuit we now have at Lydd. Now we’re looking forward to maximising its full potential and to welcome many more racers and corporate groups.”

Also present at Saturday’s launch were a fleet of Daytona Motorsport’s latest Bambino karts. Launched in 2009, the Bambinos represent a new concept in kart racing for children aged between five and seven years old. Aimed at introducing younger audience to the exhilarating world of motor sport, the Bambinos have been specially designed by CRG, with 35cc four-stroke engine, adjustable brake and accelerator pedals and tailored neck collars for absolute comfort and safety.
