Daytona Max Winter Endurance Series Rd 3
17th January 2009 – Daytona Max Endurance Winter Series Rd 3
Torrential overnight rain may have dissuaded a few teams from taking part in the last round of the DMAX Endurance series, but those teams who did make the journey to Milton Keynes found the track to be much better than anticipated and midway through the race, the sun peeked through the clouds and the circuit dried almost completely.
Having said that, the qualifying session was damp and tricky but perennial pacesetters Honda F1 took the pole position with a 1.28.000. Newcomers to the series Redmax Racing took 2nd position and Seriously Sideways drove themselves into 3rd on the grid.
Honda F1 started the race the way they meant to finish it and slowly built up a lead in the slippery conditions. Lap by lap the circuit was getting drier and times were tumbling. Team Seriously Sideways had an issue in the tricky conditions, pushing just a little too hard down from turn 7, the driver braked too late into turn 8, slew the kart ‘seriously sideways’ and hit the high kerb on the exit very hard indeed. The damage to the kart was immediately apparent. The impact had sheared the studs clean out of the rear hub and he ground to a halt with three wheels on his wagon at turn 10. Despite this setback, the team quickly changed their kart and were back in the running.
During the recovery of the stricken kart, the track went to full course yellow ad a number of teams used this to their advantage, stopping for fuel and a driver change. Team Speed is Good who had a poor qualifying by their standards were one of those teams. They did it again under a 2nd full course yellow later in the race and as a result, went from 9th on the grid to 4th at the flag, an excellent result.
The two debutant teams of Team Petrolhead and Redmax Racing showed their class immediately with a fine 2nd and 3rd place respectively at the flag. However, Honda F1 were not to be denied and it was the local team who took the chequered flag and the Winter Series title.
The final finishing positions are as follows:
1st – Honda F1
2nd – Team Petrolhead
3rd – Redmax Racing
4th – Speed is Good
5th – Seriously Sideways
6th – Team Howden
7th – Days of Thunder
A number of team were not eligible to score points and do not appear in the above results.
